Barpeta is a city in the Indian state of Assam .
The city is the capital of the Barpeta district . Barpeta has the status of a municipal board . The city is divided into 22 wards . It had 42,649 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 21,241 were men and 21,408 were women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 90%. Muslims form a minority of over 9%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 90.8%, well above the national average.
Barpeta is the gateway to Manas National Park , one of Assam's national parks and one of the few tiger reserves in India.
