Robert Douglas Houghton (born October 13, 1947 ; known as Bob Houghton or Bobby Houghton ) is an English football player and coach.

Career

His career lasted over 30 years and took him to ten different countries. Houghton was three years midfielder for Fulham FC (1966-69) and Brighton & Hove Albion (1969-70). In the South League, he was one of the youngest coaches in English professional football as a player- coach for Hastings United at the age of 23. He also coached Maidstone United in the early 1970s and worked as an assistant to Bobby Robson in Ipswich Town .

Malmö FF

In 1974 he became the coach of the Swedish first division team Malmö FF . He led the then provincial and amateur club to national and international successes, including reaching the UEFA Champions League final against Nottingham Forest in 1979, which was only just lost (0-1). The team originally consisted entirely of local players who lived within 60 km of Malmö . It was the first and so far only time that a Swedish team reached the final of the European Cup .

He also won the Swedish championship and the Svenska Cup several times and was runner-up in the Intercontinental Cup in 1979, as Nottingham Forest waived to participate. Together with his close friend Roy Hodgson , he was largely responsible for transforming Swedish football into a modern style of play.
