Holger Hansson in 1952

Holger Valdemar Hansson (born January 26, 1927 in Gothenburg , † January 17, 2014 there ) was a Swedish football player and coach. Between 1952 and 1956 he played nine international games for the Swedish national team , with which he took part in the 1952 Olympic Games .

Career

Hansson began playing football at BK Renitz , which he left for IFK Göteborg . There he made his debut in the 1946/47 season for the club in the Allsvenskan , where he ran up alongside Gunnar Gren and Rune Emanuelsson . In 1950 he was relegated to the second division with the club, but managed to get promoted again with the team. The promoted team placed fourth in the table and Hansson was promoted to national team player after making his debut as a national team player in 1948 when he met a Danish team in the national jersey. In May he ran in the 0-0 draw against the Netherlands for the first time for the selection, then he took part with this in the football competition of the 1952 Olympic Games . Until he was eliminated in the semi-finals against the golden eleven of the Hungarian national team , he was used in all three games, in the bronze medal game against the German amateur national team , won with a 2-0 win by goals from Ingvar Rydell and Gösta Löfgren , Olle Åhlund replaced him .

While Hansson succeeded with the club in the middle of the table, he also moved out of the focus of the national team and was only used irregularly. In 1956 he played his last international match, at the same time the association decided in the run-up to the 1958 World Cup finals in his own country , contrary to the previous practice of professional players - this particularly affected players such as Bengt Gustavsson , Nils Liedholm or Lennart Skoglund - in the national team Chances of further bets reduced. With a younger team towards the end of the decade, however, he won his first title, driven by the later top scorer Bertil Johansson , he won the Von Rosens Cup for the Swedish champions in the 1957/58 season . Two years earlier he had already received a personal award when Göteborgs-Tidningen had named him the best player in West Sweden.

After the end of his active career at the end of the 1960 season , Hansson became a coach. As the successor to the interim solution Gunnar Gren, who had replaced Josef Stroh during the season, he moved directly from the field to the coaching bench at IFK Göteborg. After two seasons, in which he had led the team to third place in the table, he passed the office on to Yngve Brodd . From 1965 to 1967 and 1970 to 1972 he was in charge of local competitor GAIS . In 1974 he took over the post at his old club IFK, which had meanwhile been relegated to the second division. After the desired promotion was clearly missed as fifth in the table, Nils Berghamn replaced him after only one season . Under his leadership, the team returned to the Allsvenskan two years later.
