Kelkheim-Mitte is the eponymous and, by a narrow margin, the largest district of the Hessian city of Kelkheim (Taunus) . Kelkheim is located in the Vortaunus on the western edge of Frankfurt am Main . The district has around 8,000 inhabitants. Kelkheim was first mentioned in 880 under the name Cadelcamf , 1228 under Cadelcam , 1333 under Calcamp , 1338 under Kelkamp , 1369 under Kelkam , 1381 under Kelkhem and 1434 for the first time under Kelkheim.

location

The place is in the valley of the Liederbach , a right tributary of the Main . The terrain rises sharply to the west and especially east of the valley ( slope edge at Mainblick ). In the north, the development goes directly into that of the Hornau district , in the south to that of Münster ; in the northwest, Kelkheim-Mitte is separated from the Fischbach district by a few vacant lots . There are two city parks on the Liederbach , the Mühlgrund in the north of the district and the Sindlinger Wiesen in the south.

history

Kelkheim is not the grown core of the city of the same name. Rather, this emerged in 1938 from the incorporation of the villages of Hornau and Münster and the appointment to town. Kelkheim's name was chosen as the name for the new small town because it lies in the middle of the three former villages. Since the founding of the city, and especially after the expansion to include three further districts (Fischbach, Ruppertshain and Eppenhain ) in 1977, however, Kelkheim-Mitte has developed into the center of the entire city, which today has around 29,000 inhabitants. Since then, Kelkheim-Mitte has been home to most of the city's central facilities, but also has numerous residential areas that predominantly consist of single-family houses away from the main streets .

The Bahnstrasse, Kelkheim's little Zeil

Kelkheim emerged as a street village on the western bank of the Liederbach. The former Dorfstrasse, the main street , lost its central importance in the 1950s to Frankfurter Strasse , which ran parallel to the west , as the western side of the railway line, which was also running parallel, was now developed and a connection between the three districts previously separated by open spaces was desired . While the three- to four-storey building and numerous shops make it look quite urban, the main street has remained village-like to this day. Two cross-connections between Frankfurter and Hauptstrasse form additional retail locations : the traffic-calmed Bahnstrasse in the north of the district and the “New City Center” around Frankenallee in the south.

The “New City Center”, which finally gives the whole city a real center, was started in the early 1980s on an area previously used as a parking lot . The plans for the north city center have changed several times since then. In May 2007, construction began on the northern part, which was completed in 2009. As investor for the 13,000-square-foot project was found after an investor competition the Hochtief AG . The city center north offers not only shops for the local retail trade and apartments but also the city library , there is also a hypermarket and a senior citizens' residence .

traffic

The district has a train station on the Königsteiner Bahn . Originally it was called Kelkheim-Fischbach , but today's Fischbach district is around two kilometers from the train station. After Fischbach was incorporated it was given the name Kelkheim-Mitte , but is now only called Kelkheim . The station is the most important on-the-go station on the single-track line from Königstein to Frankfurt-Höchst station ; normally the trains going to Königstein and Höchst meet here. There are also several bus routes in the district .

The Frankfurter Strasse - Bahnstrasse - Fischbacher Strasse street is designated as a state road and carries the bulk of the inner-city car traffic . Other important roads are the Pestalozzistraße - Gagernring road and the federal road 519 on the eastern edge of the town .

Buildings

The most famous building in Kelkheim is the neo-Romanesque Franciscan monastery , inaugurated in 1909 , which is located on the plateau ( Klosterberg ) east of the village and is visible from afar. Today as accounts office of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Limburg used Monastery continues to serve as a Catholic parish church of St. Francis .

The town chapel , which also belongs to this parish, is located in the main street . It was built in 1891/92 as a replacement for a wooden chapel built in 1774 and is now mainly used as a room for prayer.

The Protestant Christians in the district are members of the Paulus community , whose church is on Gustav-Adolf-Straße .

The district has a primary school , the Pestalozzi School in the street of the same name, as well as a private high school , the Judges' School on Gagernring . In the same street is the 1974 opened the town hall of the city, diagonally opposite in the Horn Straße in 1951 completed Stadthalle . Behind the town hall is the Im Stückes sports facility , home of the SG Kelkheim sports club . Today's main cemetery of the entire city is located near the old Kelkheimer Friedhof in Frankenallee .
