Outside (nature magazine)
outside (from issue 9: Nature magazine HB-outside ) was the name of a nature magazine published by HB-Verlags- und Vertriebsgesellschaft Hamburg.
History and description
The first issue of the nature magazine appeared in 1979 with a magazine about the Eifel . Outwardly, it was based heavily on the HB-Bildatlas published by the same publisher since 1977 . In each issue, a German nature park or an important landscape area of Central Europe was presented. Occasionally, natural areas in other European regions ( Camargue , Iceland , Norway ) were also covered. The booklets comprised 100 pages and were provided with numerous color illustrations and an overview map. In several chapters, which came from the pen of well-known biologists and recognized experts of the region, not only the typical plants and animals of the respective landscape were presented, but also the geological conditions were explained. At the end of the booklet there was “information for nature lovers”, information on natural sights, observation places and nature reserves . The booklets, which were mainly available in newsagents (at kiosks and in train station bookstores ), initially cost 6.50 DM, later then 9.80 DM.
In 1987, before German reunification , the series with volume 50 was discontinued. East German landscape areas were therefore completely disregarded.
The name of the series, like that of the publisher, is based on the name of the well-known cigarette brand HB . The brand's logo, a red triangle with a yellow background with the initials HB, can be seen on the cover of the magazine. However, it is a little different from the HB art guide logo .
In 1989, Bertelsmann Lesering and the Schloß-Verlag in Munich brought out some titles as licensed editions in the series Nature of our Homeland . The content was completely identical, but in contrast to those from HB-Verlag the booklets had a cardboard cover.
