geography
location
The Stoppelberg, with its long ridge towards the southwest, lies on the northern foothills of the Eastern Hintertaunus . It is located in the far north of the Taunus Nature Park, around 3.3 km south-southeast of the old town of Wetzlar and around 2.4 km (as the crow flies ) east of its Nauborn district . The Lahn tributary Wetzbach flows west past the mountain .
Natural allocation
The Stoppelberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30) and in the main unit Eastern Hintertaunus (302) to the subunit Wetzlarer Hintertaunus (302.0).
colonization
The Stoppelberg and the surrounding area were settled early on: people lived here from the Mesolithic Age (10,000 to 4,500 BC). This is proven by finds from different prehistoric epochs. From the Bronze Age , besides barrows , the urn field culture can be found around the mountain . The ramparts on the Stoppelberg date back to the earlier Iron Age ( Hallstatt D , 650–475 BC), so it could be a fortified hilltop settlement, a so-called castle .
About 1.4 km (as the crow flies) west of the mountain peak is one of the Wetzlar excursion destinations, the cherry grove belonging to the Nauborn district as a small, quiet weekend house area with restaurants and garden bars.
Observation tower
Wetzlar's youngest observation tower is on the Stoppelberg . It was built in 1929 by the Hollmann company to replace its dilapidated wooden predecessor.
Transmitting station
In 2004, the construction of a 48 m high transmission tower designed as a steel frame construction began .
