Entry into the state parliament

After the state elections in Hesse in 2008 , Dagmar Metzger was directly elected member of the state parliament for the constituency of Darmstadt-Stadt II for the 17th electoral period beginning on April 5, 2008 and prevailed against the previous deputy prime minister Karin Wolff (CDU). By resolution of the Hessian Landtag on November 19, 2008, the Landtag was dissolved and a new Landtag election for January 18, 2009 was necessary. Dagmar Metzger no longer ran for re-formation by the SPD base due to internal party conflicts and thus a hopeless constellation.

Opposition to tolerance by the Left Party

Metzger became known nationwide in March 2008 when she spoke out against the election of the SPD state chairman Andrea Ypsilanti as Hessian Prime Minister under a red-green minority government with the votes of the left . Metzger stated that, for reasons of conscience, she wanted to abstain from voting in Ypsilanti's election. You feel bound by the promise made before the election not to cooperate with the Left . She also gave personal reasons: she had experienced the consequences of the building of the Wall and the Stasi in her own family. With Metzger's announced abstention, the theoretical majority in the state parliament consisting of the SPD, the Greens and the left would have shrunk to just one vote. As a result, Ypsilanti initially announced that she was not going to run for office as Prime Minister of Hesse and only dared to make a new attempt in October 2008 with a trial vote in the SPD parliamentary group for a left-tolerant red-green minority government. After massive pressure from the party and parliamentary group, Metzger initially stated that she was considering resigning her mandate. Among other things, the member of the SPD party executive, Hermann Scheer , said in an interview with the Passauer Neue Presse that he thought it was right for Metzger to resign from her mandate. On March 11, 2008, after a parliamentary group meeting, she announced that she would not give up her mandate and described attempts to persuade her to resign as " running the gauntlet ". Although she approved motions that were decided together with the left-wing parliamentary group in the state parliament, she announced that she would continue to prevent Ypsilanti's election as prime minister. That is a question of their political credibility.

An attempt by the Hessian SPD General Secretary Norbert Schmitt to “praise” her in the Bundestag was rejected by Metzger at the end of May 2008, pointing out that she had moved into the Hessian state parliament in order to stay at least through the legislative period.

On November 3, 2008, Carmen Everts , Silke Tesch and Jürgen Walter, together with Metzger, declared that they would not support the election of Andrea Ypsilanti as Prime Minister with votes from the Left Party on November 4. The planned coalition of the SPD and the Greens , tolerated by Die Linke, thus became impossible.

On November 14, 2008, Metzger announced that he would not run for the upcoming state elections in January 2009. According to stern.de , she announced: There is no basis for cooperation with the SPD parliamentary group. The renewal of the SPD in Hesse called for by Federal Chairman Franz Müntefering was not even recognizable. Hostility and insults hit them deeply and are unworthy of a democratic party. A regulatory procedure by the SPD local association Wiesbaden, which had originally been applied for against all four deviants, was set on January 18, 2009 for Dagmar Metzger. The reason for this was the credible presentation of reasons of conscience in March 2008.

Positions

Metzger is considered to be close to the Seeheimer Kreis of the SPD.
