hr XXL was the youth wave of the Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) from January 5, 1998 to December 31, 2003 . It was created as one of the broadcasting corporation's four “plus programs”, initially as a supplement to the “main program” hr3 . This was also evident from the fact that various time segments were broadcast on both waves and the name "hr XXL" was derived from the earlier hr3 program "XXL". However, the station was quickly expanded into an independent program.

The station enjoyed a high reputation among its listeners due to its modern music selection. Initially, the focus was on electronic music , which was also noticeable through the takeover of the hr3 Clubnight , later the program consisted of a more balanced mix of alternative music.

Every year on the Easter weekend an HR XXL Easter March was held, which featured live and DJ sets of various musical styles around the clock, such as Played hip-hop, house and electro.

Although it was a public broadcaster, the ratings for the hr were not satisfactory. At the end of 2003 the name hr XXL was given up as part of a relaunch and the hr youth program was continued under the You FM brand . One of the official reasons was that the name "hr XXL" was still associated with electronic music for many listeners despite the multiple revised music selection.
