The Marian Column of the monastery Ochsenhausen is a July 11, 1717 the feast of St. Benedict , cornerstone laid and on December 2, 1717 Maria consecrated statue on a column , called Marian Column , in the courtyard at Fürstenbau the former ochsenhausen abbey in Ochsenhausen in the district of Biberach in Upper Swabia .

history

A first Marian column is documented in Ochsenhausen as early as the 17th century. On September 28, 1678, Abbot Balthasar Puolamer commissioned the painter and sculptor Johann Jakob Stauder, who lived in Ochsenhausen, to erect a Marian column. Regular prayers are said to have taken place at the pillar.

The current column dates back to 1717. The foundation consists of 6000 bricks and was set eight shoes deep into the ground. On it is a stone slab with the name of the abbot at the time and who commissioned the column, Hieronymus II. Lindau . The stones of the column come from a quarry near Wertach and were broken by the Wertach master Ignaz Hengg. After the transport to Ochsenhausen, the stones were carved there by Franz Joseph Erb from Ravensburg . According to billing slips from the years 1716/17, the column alone cost 1054 guilders , about half of which was billed for transport.

The wooden model of the Mother of God depicting an Immaculate was made by the Augsburg baroque sculptor Ehrgott Bernhard Bendl . Mary is standing on a globe. Her figure is wrapped in a billowing cloak. With her hands joined together in adoration and her head held up with a starring hoop, she purposefully sets her foot on the snake .

The wooden model was 40 guilders per invoice documents. The copper statue was probably gilded by the Augsburg artist Franz Joseph Reichle. In the year the column was erected, there are also extensive invoices for valuable liturgical implements belonging to the Augsburg resident. The grid around the Marian column comes from the Ochsenhausen locksmith Albrecht. The total cost of the foundation, column and statue was 3,291 guilders.
