Nevsky Prospect ( Russian: Невский проспект ) is a metro station of the Saint Petersburg Metro on Line 2 and an important subway transfer hub in the center of Saint Petersburg .

The subway station, which was named after the Nevsky Prospect street , under which it was laid at a depth of 63 meters, went into operation on July 1, 1963 when Line 2 was first extended northwards.

general description

The subway station is located in the area of Nevsky Prospect, where it crosses the Griboyedov Canal . The Kazan Cathedral , the Gostiny Dwor shopping mall , the house with the delicatessen store Jelissejew and numerous other historical sights are also in the immediate vicinity .

The station can be reached from the street via two separate entrances. The western entrance is built into the four-story late classicist house 30 on the north side of Nevsky Prospect at its intersection with the banks of the Griboyedov Canal. This approach was also used as shared access to both Metro Station Nevsky Prospekt as the station Gostiny Dvor the line 3 built, which is connected to the station Nevsky Prospekt by a direct transition. The western access was also only completed in 1967, shortly before the Gostiny Dvor station went into operation. From the counter hall, which takes up part of the first floor of House 30, you can take the escalator to the lower distribution level and from there to the two underground stations. The other access to the subway station, which was opened at the same time as the completion of the same, is not via an above-ground vestibule, but from a branched pedestrian underpass under the Nevsky Prospect at the level of Gostiny Dwor. Here you can reach the underground station via a long escalator from the counter hall and a short flight of stairs between the lower mezzanine level and the platform.

architecture

The basic architectural structure of the station - a platform hall supported by rows of pylons - was based on the underground stations opened in 1955, but decorated in a much less elaborate manner. The pylons, which are slightly curved towards the vault, have a simple white paintwork, as do the outer walls and the vaulted ceiling; the only original detail in the design of the platform hall are the polished aluminum cornices on the pylons. The outer walls above the two track beds, which were still clad with glass tiles until 2006, are now adorned with newer dark red tiles. The floor cladding is made of gray granite without a pattern.

particularities

The fact that the Nevsky Prospect metro station is one of the busiest stations on the Petersburg metro due to its central location and importance as a transfer station made it necessary to manage the passenger flows separately when changing between the two metro stations. Passengers who want to change from line 2 to line 3 have to walk to the northern end of the platform hall and from there go to the right via short escalators to the Gostiny Dvor station, where the escalators leading to the left reach the Nevsky Prospekt metro station with its connecting the western vestibule on the Griboyedov Canal. A different route is provided for those passengers who want to turn from line 3 to line 2. These reach the middle area of the Nevsky Prospect platform via a transition tunnel and subsequent stairs over the tracks. The automatic access barriers that are set up there only let passengers from the direction of Gostiny Dwor through, which ensures that those transferring from Line 2 to Line 3 only use the corresponding separate route and that the opposing passenger flows do not get in each other's way.

Another special feature of the subway station is its entrance integrated into a pedestrian underpass under Nevsky Prospect. The practice of building subway entrances in pedestrian tunnels is common in Moscow , for example , but an absolute exception in Petersburg, where there are only a few underground pedestrian crossings. The underpass under Nevsky Prospect was also the first of its kind in what was then Leningrad.
