Gostiny Dvor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gostiny Dwor ( Russian Гостиный Двор , Russian for inn ) is the largest department store in Saint Petersburg and the second largest department store in Russia after Moscow's GUM .

The department store, designed by Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli and Jean-Baptiste Vallin de La Mothe and built between 1761 and 1785, occupies almost an entire district on Nevsky Prospect with a facade length of more than one kilometer. After a fire in 1990 and a complete redesign of the interior, the early classical building is now a western-style shopping center with around 200 mostly high-priced retail stores. The building is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St. Petersburg, which comprises around 2,300 structures.

The Gostiny Dvor subway station , which opened in 1967, is named after Gostiny Dvor . One of its two entrances is located directly in the department store building.
