Ponta do Sol [ ˈpõtɐ ðu ˈsɔɫ ] is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in the southwest of the Portuguese island of Madeira . On June 30, 2011 the city had 4577 inhabitants on an area of 27.5 km².

In blue, a silver sun with a face and a red mouth and golden straight and flamed rays. A silver four-tower wall crown over the shield . In the white band at the base of the shield, the place name in black letters "PONTA DO SOL".
history
After the uninhabited island of Madeira was settled by the Portuguese from 1420 , the town of Ponta do Sol emerged from around 1425 . From around 1440 lucrative sugar cane cultivation was intensively practiced here . In 1501 the place became the seat of its own district.
Culture and sights
In Ponta do Sol, there is the John Dos Passos cultural center (Centro Cultural John Dos Passos) named after the American writer John Dos Passos , whose grandfather came from here.
At the beginning of December, Ponta do Sol is organizing the internationally renowned festival for digital music and sound art MADEIRADiG and the Micro Film Festival MMiFF.
Some historical public buildings, a number of agricultural mansions , and a large number of sacred buildings are listed in the district, including the main church Igreja Matriz de Ponta do Sol , built in the 16th century, and after its patron saint also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz (Eng .: Church Our Lady of Light). The historic town center is also protected as a whole.
Hikes along the levadas in the district are possible.
