The museum, housed in the former photo studio of Vicente Gomes da Silva in the center of Funchal, shows the history of photography since its invention on an area of around 200 m² using numerous original cameras, some of which were made by the Vicente family and others by manufacturers like Carl Zeiss or Kodak . In addition to the actual history of photography, the museum also shows the history of Funchal using original photos. There are around 800,000 negatives dating between 1870 and 1978. Vicente Gomes da Silva family and the creation of the museum

The founder Vicente Gomes da Silva (1827–1906) began as an engraver in the church district in 1846. In 1865 Vicente set up Portugal's first photo studio on Rua da Carreira , today's location . The studio, which he enlarged with his son in 1886 and 1887, has been preserved in its original state to this day.

The founder became one of the most famous photographers in Madeira and counted numerous prominent personalities among his customers. In 1860 he received the title “Photographe de Sa Majesté L'Imperatrice d'Austriche” when he was allowed to photograph Empress Elisabeth of Austria. He later also became a photographer for the Portuguese royal family with Carlos I and his wife Amélie .

The studio was run by the Vicentes family for four generations. In 1982 the museum was founded with the inventory of the studio and was supplemented in the following years with exhibits from other studios and Madeirian amateur photographers. It documents the history of the island in numerous photos, which are shown in original prints.

After revising the collection, the museum was reopened in 2001.

The museum, located in the former photo studio at Rua Carreira 43, was closed on May 5, 2014. It has been open again since July 29, 2019 after restoration work.
