Robert E. Lerner

Robert Earl Lerner (born February 8, 1940 in New York City ) is an American historian and professor emeritus of medieval history at Northwestern University .

Lerner studied at the University of Chicago (BA) and received his doctorate in 1964 under Joseph R. Strayer at Princeton University .

Lerner's main areas of research include medieval heresies , apocalyptics, and millenarianism . He has also dealt with a number of topics from medieval religious and intellectual history. His main works are Heresy of the Free Spirit in the Later Middle Ages (1972), The Powers of Prophecy (1983) and The Feast of Saint Abraham (2001). Among other things, the following have been published in German: Prophecies about the Popes (1985) and New Directions in the High and Late Medieval Bible Exegesis (1996).

Frequently cited contributions by Lerner include “Refreshment of the Saints” (1976) and “Ecstatic Dissent” (1992). He was also the co-author of a textbook on Western civilization translated into several languages.

Lerner is a member of the Medieval Academy of America and the American Academy in Rome . He has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation , the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Historisches Kolleg in Munich and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC In 1996 he was honored with the Max Planck Research Award.

Lerner was visiting professor at many American and European universities, including the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, the Free University of Berlin and the universities of Oxford , Heidelberg , and Florence . He is an active member of the editorial board of a number of historical magazines.

In 2017, Lerner published a biography of the medieval historian Ernst Kantorowicz and has since been working on an edition of sources from the time of the Western Schism .

Lerner is married with two children and lives in Evanston , Illinois .
