The Museu de Arte Sacra in Funchal ( Autonomous Region Madeira ) is a museum for Christian art and liturgical implements.

history

The museum was founded on July 1, 1955 with holdings from various churches and chapels in Madeira, private donations and some loans. It is maintained by the diocese of Funchal .

The museum is located in the building at Rua do Bispo 21, which was built in the 16th century, rebuilt in the 17th century and renovated as a Baroque building after the earthquake of 1748 under Bishop D. João do Nascimento , which was the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Funchal until 1910 was and housed the grammar school from 1913 to 1942.

In addition to an extensive collection of liturgical implements, mainly made of silver (including a gilded processional cross from the 16th century from the cathedral of Funchal donated by King Manuel I ), the museum houses vestments and religious wooden sculptures (with some good pieces from Flanders) as well as Portuguese Paintings (including a Maria Lactans with Saints Dominic and Francis from the chapel of Tabua from the early 17th century) as a highlight a collection of Flemish paintings, especially from the 16th century, which were produced in Madeira in exchange for deliveries from the then highly sought-after Zuckers came to the churches on the island.

Flemish panel paintings include a 15th century panel of Saint James the Elder attributed to Dierick Bouts , a triptych of the Descent from the Cross (c.1518, attributed to Gerard David ), an Adoration of the Magi by the Master of the Adoration of Machico, influenced by Joos van Cleve , Saints Joachim and Anna, also attributed to the Master of Adoration of Machico, an Annunciation, a triptych with the Annunciation and the Birth of Christ, both attributed to Joos van Cleve, a Saint Maria Magdalena ascribed to Jan Provost , a Saint Elizabeth (Isabel) and others attributed to the master of the Morrison Triptych .
