Funchal Cathedral
Sé is the common name of the cathedral in Funchal on Madeira Island , the full name is Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção . It is the mother church of the Funchal diocese .
The construction of the late Gothic church was planned in 1488 and started in 1500. The construction management was done by the stonemason Gil Enes and the carpenter Péro Annes. In 1508 the church was consecrated by Bishop Lobo. On June 12, 1514, the church was elevated to a cathedral when the third bishopric for Portugal was built in Funchal . The current high altar and choir were consecrated on October 18, 1517.
