Jan Provost
Jan Provost or Jean Provost (* around 1465 in Bergen (Wallonia) , † January 1529 in Bruges ) was a Flemish painter.
As the son of the painter Jan Provost d. Ä. he received training from the painter and book illustrator Simon Marmion in Valenciennes . In 1494 Provost acquired citizenship in Bruges, at the same time he became a member of the guild of sculptors and saddlers, to which all artists belonged. Between 1498 and 1505 Provost made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem . In 1519 he became dean of the artists' guild in Bruges. In 1520 he arranged the decoration of the festive entry of Emperor Charles V into Bruges. In Antwerp he met the painter Albrecht Dürer , whom he temporarily lodged in his house in Bruges in 1521. In 1525 Provost completed the panel The Last Judgment for the Schöffensaal of the Bruges City Hall , the only painting by Provost, "whose authenticity is absolutely certain from the sources."
