The Funchal is a passenger ship of the Portuguese shipping company Portuscale Cruises based in Lisbon . His home port is Funchal , capital of the island of Madeira , which belongs to Portugal . It is noteworthy that the name of the ship has never been changed in its 50-year history, despite several changes of owner and some modifications.
history
The Funchal was built at the Danish shipyard Helsingør Skibsværft og Maskinbyggeri in Helsingør . The launch took place on February 10, 1961. In October 1961 the ship was delivered for the Empresa Insulana de Navegacao shipping company based in Lisbon and on November 5, 1961 for the combined use as a ferry and cruise ship on the Lisbon - Madeira - Azores route put into service. In the winter of 1972/73 it was converted into a cruise ship at the Nederlandse Dok shipyard in Amsterdam . Since the originally existing steam turbine system had proven to be too susceptible to failure, it was replaced by diesel engines. From March 1973 the Funchal was for the shipping company Cia. Portuguesa des Transportes Maritimos, based in Lisbon, is used as a cruise ship.
From 1985 she drove for the Arcalia Shipping Company. After a further renovation in autumn 2003, she belonged to the fleet of Classic International Cruises , which also included the Princess Danae , Princess Daphne and the Athena . After the bankruptcy of the shipping company in September 2012, the ship was launched.
In May 2013, the Funchal was bought by the newly founded shipping company Portuscale Cruises and converted into a 4-star cruise ship in Lisbon. The ship got its original black hull back.
On August 28, 2013 the Funchal was chained due to safety deficiencies in Gothenburg and could not start her first cruise after the renovation. The passengers had to leave the ship. The ship has been laid up in Lisbon since January 2015 .
The Funchal was auctioned on December 5, 2018 . Signature Living acquired the ship for £ 3.9 million . Initially it was planned to use the ship as a hotel ship in London. It is now planned to convert the ship into a party ship.
Machine system
Originally the disposal Funchal on two sets of Parsons - geared turbines , which affected the two propellers and a speed of about 20 knots allowed. They developed a total output of around 9,000 kW (around 12,250 hp ). As part of the renovation work in the winter of 1972/73, the system was expanded and replaced by two nine-cylinder diesel engines from Stork-Werkspoor . At a speed of 500 rpm, the engines together produce around 7,356 kW (10,000 hp ). The ship is equipped with five diesel generators for power supply.
