The Princess Daphne (formerly Ocean Monarch , Switzerland , Daphne , Akrotiri Express , Port Sydney ) was a 3-star cruise ship .

history

Use as a cargo ship

The ship was built as a cargo ship with hull number 1827 at the British shipyard Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson , Newcastle upon Tyne , for the shipping company Port Line , London. The keel was laid on August 13, 1953 and it was launched on October 29, 1954 . This was followed by the solemn baptism in the name of Port Sydney by the wife of the chairman of the Port Line. The delivery to the shipping company and commissioning was on March 3, 1955.

The ship had a sister ship , the Port Melbourne, built in 1955 , which was also converted into a cruise ship.

Both ships were built for service between the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The maiden voyage of Port Sydney passed through a number of ports in South Africa to Brisbane , Australia , and Auckland , New Zealand . From there the journey home was started.

The freighter was equipped with a six-cylinder Doxford diesel engine that propelled two propellers, with which the ship reached a speed of 17  knots . The cargo capacity was 180,000 frozen lamb halves and 15,000 cotton bales. There was also space on board for twelve passengers who could travel in eight single and two double cabins.

From March 10, 1968, the ship belonged to the shipping company Blueport, a joint company of the Port Line and the Blue Star Line . In 1972 the ship was sold to Chion Shipping Co. Ltd. sold in Greece and renamed Akrotiki Express in 1973 .

Use as a cruise ship

In 1974 the ship was converted into a cruise ship with a capacity of 503 passengers at Chalkas Shipyard. In the same year the ship was sold to the Akrotiki Express Shipping Co. in Greece and renamed Daphne . The new owner used the ship for cruises in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea .

In 1976 the ship was sold to Delian Athina Cruises Inc., Greece. The name was retained. In 1978 the ship was chartered by Flotta Lauro for one season. From 1979 Costa Armatori SpA (Linea C) , Genoa, chartered the ship for five years.

In 1985 Costa Armatori SpA (Linea C) bought the ship and registered it under Independent Continental Lines Ltd., Panama . In the following years it was used for cruises in American waters.

In the early 1990s the ship of Prestige Cruise Lines was bereedert . In 1996 the ship was completely renovated, some technical data also changed.

In 1997 it was chartered by ICH (Switzerland) and renamed Switzerland . Leisure Cruises in Panama took over the management. At that time, the ship had 440 passengers and a crew of 210.

On August 23, 2001, nearly 25 percent of the passengers on a cruise in Northern Europe contracted salmonella . Chickens that were part of a supply of provisions in Amsterdam were suspected to be the source of this infection.

The Ocean Monarch 2008 arriving in Kiel

In September 2001 the ship was modernized again. The work was completed on September 27, 2001. The cabins received new fittings and the entire ship received new floor coverings and carpets. At that time, the Swiss charter company ICH, a subsidiary of the Swissair airline , was no longer able to settle outstanding bills due to its bankruptcy. The ship was then advertised for sale. On February 24, 2002, Majestic Cruises bought the ship and renamed it Ocean Odyssey . It was now sailing under the Panamanian flag. In the same year the ship was registered on Majestic Marine. It was renamed Ocean Monarch and brought under the flag of Portugal. Management took over Majestic Marine, Athens, Greece.

In 2005 the ship was chartered by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 800 tons of relief supplies and medicines were transported to Sri Lanka , which was badly affected by the tsunami as a result of the earthquake in the Indian Ocean . Subsequently, the ship was used as a floating hospital with specially trained medical staff from various charities. Majestic International Cruises offered the charter at a special price.

In 2007 the ship was sold to Golden Laurel Maritime Inc., Madeira, renamed Princess Daphne and transferred from Piraeus to Lisbon in January 2008. World Cruise Agency, Lisbon took over the management. The Princess Daphne initially drove for the tour operator Hansa Kreuzfahrten. After the insolvency of Hansa Kreuzfahrten, the ship sailed for the newly founded company Ambiente Kreuzfahrten in 2012 . At the beginning of October 2012, the Princess Daphne was arrested in Crete because of open claims from creditors of the shipping company .
