John Thomas "Jocky" Wilson (born March 22, 1950 in Kirkcaldy ; † March 24, 2012 ibid) was a Scottish world champion in darts .

Career

Jocky Wilson played as a professional for the British Darts Organization (BDO) from 1979 to 1993 . He was able to win the Lakeside Professional World Darts Championship in 1982 (against John Lowe ) and 1989 (against Eric Bristow ) .

In 1993 he was one of the major darts players involved who split off from the BDO and founded the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). However, he could not repeat the strong performances he had made in the BDO in the PDC. His greatest success during this time was reaching the quarter-finals at the 1994 World Matchplay .

Wilson, who worked in the mining industry as a professional dart player before his career, was known to drink a lot of alcohol on the darts stage, up to five pints of beer (about 2.9 liters) in the evening. At the age of 28 he had lost all of his teeth because he never brushed them, on the grounds that his grandmother had assured him that the English would poison the water. After winning his first world title, he had a set of teeth made for £ 1,200 that he never wore because, as he said, it made him burp.

Before winning the 1982 World Cup, Jocky Wilson was suspended for some time for hitting a referee. The background was a difference of opinion about the Falklands War taking place at the time . Wilson was married to an Argentine woman who also bears the patriotic first names Malvina (the Argentine name of the Falkland Islands is Malvinas ) and Eva after Evita Peron . The couple had three children. In 1983 Wilson published his autobiography Jocky Wilson's Own Story .

Jocky Wilson suffered from serious illnesses, including COPD , which resulted from his heavy consumption of alcohol, tobacco and sweets, but also probably from his work as a miner. This ultimately led to the end of his career in 1995. However, he did not officially announce this, but went into hiding after the World Matchplay in 1995 and since then has lived isolated from the public in his hometown, refusing all interviews. He lived on a handicap pension.

In 2011, Julian Schwanitz made an 18-minute documentary about Wilson: Kirkcaldy Man . In November 2013 it was announced that a feature film about his life would be made.
