Alina is the third studio album by the German music duo Frida Gold . Named after the group's singer, Alina Süggeler , the album was released on September 30, 2016.

Emergence

Alina was originally planned as an English-language album called Frida Gold : “We followed the first ideas for the English album with all passion and conviction. I felt it reflected my way of life well because I was in a relationship with an American for a long time and loved and lived in English. And then there was the moment when we had to find out that our loyal "Frida Gold" fans did not agree. Maybe it wasn't the right time either. ”( Alina Süggeler : n-tv interview) The release was scheduled for October 23, 2015, but the previously released single" Run Run Run "didn't bring the expected success, so the album has been postponed indefinitely. Most of the songs, however, were made public in November 2015 when the 3sat broadcaster broadcast an almost one-hour concert by the group as part of the zdf @ Bauhaus series . The recording of the concert has since been removed from the ZDF media library. Then Süggeler and Weizel began to translate some of the songs into German - during this time, however, new songs were also created, which found their way onto the album's track list.

content

The basic theme of the album is releasing and overcoming fears. It is "an attempt to find myself [...] the attempt to show everything about myself, not just certain sides and facets that I like," says Süggeler.

  • The album starts with "Andis Song", which addresses the romantic ["We were so much in love. / But that didn't lead to anything."] And then the friendly relationship between singer Alina Süggeler and Andreas Weizel, and Süggeler her boyfriend for his longstanding loyalty and support thanks. [“The way you have been standing there for years./And you no longer go./Gives me so much.”] In a live chat on Facebook Weizel named "Andi's Song" as his favorite song on the album.
  • "Wir Sind Zuhaus" was originally recorded as "Touch The Sky" for the English language album. The German translation was taken from the album as the second single, and the accompanying music video was filmed under the direction of Mischa Meyer. According to Süggeler, the basic message of the song is that “everyone can find a home anywhere, at any time, if there is someone who opens up”.
  • In "Ich Hab Angst", Süggeler speaks about the uncertainty that her counterpart cannot deal with her weaknesses and character. ["Sometimes I'm so scared. That you can't carry me like that."] The singer named the song as her favorite song on the album. In its original English version, the song was titled "Scared To Lose".
  • "Slowly" was released as the third single from the album. The music video shot by Autumn Sonnichsen caught the public eye in August 2016, as Süggeler shows himself completely naked in it. Regarding the decision to appear naked in the video, she said: “Being naked was simply the most logical, clearest way for us to present the song artistically. "Slowly" is about standing by yourself, removing everything that weighs you down and veils you. Anyone who is naked is without a facade, with himself, true and honest. "
  • In its original version, “Rebel In Chanel” contained the line of text “Always remember that you are a woman”, whose inspiration Süggeler explained as follows: “A few years ago I started reading a biography about Coco Chanel . Your lover always said 'Always remember that you are a woman'. [...] I take it to mean that women are not allowed to throw their sensitive side overboard in such a tough men's business as the fashion industry was at the time. In my industry too, I often have the feeling that I have to fight and stand by my wife. And I wonder how you can maintain your sensitivity as a fighter. "
  • "Back to Me" is about "going back to what you are, to the core, the origin" ["Whenever it's difficult, it is so difficult. / Let's take a step back."], In the development of the song, the question also arose: “What happens when you feel powerless and have no hope and no longer have courage? Here, too, I think it helps to reflect on the origin, to focus and to find one's center. ”The group posted a first clip of the song, which contains the text parts“ Follow your heart, 'till the end of time ”in January 2015 on their Facebook page. The English version of the song "My Love Is Me" was presented as an acoustic piano ballad at the concert of the zdf @ bauhaus series.
  • "Heaven" addresses the desire for freedom and peace ["Want us to be free. / Need stop anyway."], And the recognition that everyone has to be active to fulfill these wishes ["But what is. / If you wish here not enough? ”] At the end of the song Süggeler starts an appeal to the listener not to remain inactive. ["I can't get that into my head. / That we don't feel responsible. / Without us nothing changes."] In contrast to its English-language counterpart "Let It Go", "Heaven" was also rewritten linguistically and thematically.
  • Based on the proverb "Whoever Lies" was created within a day and revolves around the disappointment, anger and despair of being lied to by a trusted person. ["Because where there are lies there is nothing left. / And everything that was dissolves. / There is no ground or ground to build on"] Süggeler emphasized that her new album, unlike the previous one, is love My religion is not about illuminating a certain topic from different angles, but rather capturing the pure emotion at this moment: "Lying [...] simply takes the ground, all trust. In every situation you ask yourself: 'Is that true now, was what was before all true?' I think that really upsets something. "
  • "In My Sleep" is one of the first songs that was written for the album. The first ideas for the song came up in spring 2014.
  • The last song on the album, "Run Run Run", was adopted unchanged as an English version on the German album.

reception

Criticism

The reviews of the album Alina were mostly negative. The biggest criticism are the lyrics:

  • “It is not an exaggeration to say that Frida Gold sums up everything that German pop music is currently doing wrong. [...] It is better to cover up the cloak of silence about the texts, you will look in vain for depth of content on "Alina". Almost every song wants to negotiate a complex emotional construct, but fails because of the phrases that have already been heard a thousand times. ”- Marinus Seeleitner, tonspion.de
  • “You get the feeling that Alina doesn't really get along with the German language. [...] Alina is so meaningless at many points and full of embarrassing lyrics that only resigned shaking of the head remains. ”- Johannes Jimeno, laut.de
  • “The arrangements that partner Andreas Weizel puts around the voice are in places refined. [...] Unfortunately, the redundant issues of young city dwellers overlay these subtleties. Spoken in the English-German mishmash of the album, it's about boyfriends, girlfiends and your own place in the interpersonal confusion. [...] Only the remnants of flirting with the English-speaking market "In My Sleep" manage to initiate an arc of tension including a vocal and musical outburst. There it was after all - that one concentrated charge of energy. ”- Michael Rubach, plattentests.de

However, critics also found words of praise for the more mature tone of the album:

  • “The lyrics about love and self-acceptance are not surprising. The few remaining German-English pieces, which were otherwise so typical for the band, make the record a bit more mature. The new songs are also no longer desperately trimmed to be danceable. Above all, the beautiful voice of front woman Alina stands out. ”- Aniko Schusterus, spreewild.de
