Thierry Geoffroy (* 1961 in Nancy , France ), also known as Colonel , is a Danish-French artist who lives in Copenhagen , Denmark . He is a conceptual artist using a variety of media including video and installation , often in collaboration with other artists and the public.

Format art

Geoffroy describes his work as "format art" because the format of the work of art is the work of art. In 1989 he wrote a manifesto on five types of traveling exhibitions (Manifeste - Les differents Types de moving Exhibitions). He has since worked on several other formats, the best known being Emergency Room, which toured internationally and was shown at the PS 1 Contemporary Art Center in New York City . The formats generally involve a large number of participants and are designed to study social psychology (e.g. conflict, collaboration). His method is inspired by the television program format: art institutions wishing to use an art format must acquire a license and consent to the use of the original title, architectural concept and methods. Extensive documentation is always created with video and photo material as central elements.

Emergency room

Geoffroy developed the concept of the "Emergency Room" to give artists the opportunity to react quickly to current events. The exhibits are changed daily. Events of the 'Emergency Room' took place in Copenhagen, Berlin , New York, Athens , Hanoi , Johannesburg , Naples and Paris (in which over 500 artists took part).

Biennalist

Biennalist is another art format by Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel, which simultaneously comments on the active biennial concept and the management of cultural events through works of art. Biennalist takes the subject of biennials and similar events such as documenta , festivals and conferences seriously and questions the established structures of the staged art events in order to contribute to the debate they want to generate. The relevance of the topics at the biennials is often tested on site. Biennalist was activated at the [Istanbul Biennale 2007], the Venice Biennale 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, the Athens Biennale 2007 and 2011, the Sydney Biennale 2010, the Sarema Biennale 1997, the Rotterdam Biennale 1990, the U-Turn Quadriennale 2008, the Manifesta 8, 2010, and the [Liverpool Biennale] 2010. Biennalist was also activated in an exhibition at the ZKM Museum Karlsruhe and at the Akademie der Kunste Berlin.

Critical Run

Critical Run is an art format like Emergency Room and Biennalist. The participants in the run debate "emergency" issues such as climate change, xenophobia, wars, hypocrisy and apathy. The Critical Run organized by Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel was activated at the invitation of institutions such as Moderna Museet in Stockholm, MoMA PS1, [Witte de With Rotterdam], ZKM Karlsruhe , Liverpool Biennale, Sprengel Museum in Hanover and at the Venice Biennale. The format can also be activated spontaneously.

Participants included Swedish art critics, German police officers, American climate activists, Chinese gallery owners, Brazilian students and many others in over 20 countries.

Awareness Muscle

The "Awareness Muscle Training" format aims to train the collective "consciousness muscle". It uses the act of physical training as a metaphor for training awareness and critical thinking. The format uses fitness equipment as stimulation. This format was activated as a presentation in the Blackwood Gallery in Toronto , Canada and will be activated as an installation in September 2020 at the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, Germany. This installation will contain specially adapted fitness equipment.

Different work

Geoffroy has also made several productions for the Danish state television DR2 . Including the programs "Capitain" (1999), "Immigrants" (2001), "Photographing" (2002) and "Protest-Underwear" (2005). The choice of media is often changing and mostly concerns the contemporary . Newspapers, radio, fashion industry, telephones, internet domains, parties, music festivals, performance, Myspace and Facebook are among the elements of the cross-media practice of artists.

Central to Thierry Geoffroy's philosophy seems to be the concern that contemporary artists have an obligation to deal with current issues ("emergencies"). This is particularly evident in its Emergency Room and Awareness Muscle formats.

In parallel to the artist's conceptual format works of art, he has also dealt with topics such as immigration, multiculturalism, colonialism, tourism, hypocrisy and the role of the artist.
