Athens Biennale
The Athens Biennale is an exhibition of international contemporary art that takes place in different locations in Athens . It is the largest art exhibition in Greece .

In November 2005 the three curators Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Poka-Yio and Augustine Zenakos founded the trio of curators XYZ, from which the Athens Biennale Non-Profit Organization emerged .
The venues are mainly in the poorer parts of Athens with a high proportion of migrants. The centerpiece is the former gas station, which is used as the Technopolis cultural center . Works of painting, sculpture and film are shown. Curators and artists waive their fees.
In addition to the activities in Athens, the Athens Biennale also takes part in or organizes external events. Including: Goldfish Suddenly Dead , (Extra City, Antwerpen 2009); Away and Boil Your Head , (Palazzo Valle, Catania, 2010); Prayer for (Passive?) Resistance 2007; ICT Athens 2010 Congress.
Exhibitions
The Biennale has always been held in autumn-winter so far, there is a time overlap with the Thessaloniki Biennale , which has been taking place since 2007 , so that foreign visitors can visit both exhibitions in one trip.
Both the Biennale and Documenta 14 will take place in Athens in 2017 . The Athens part of the Documenta is brought forward into the spring, while Documenta 14 in Kassel will open a month later.
1st Biennial Destroy Athens
The first biennial in 2007 was called Destroy Athens . Works by 100 international artists were shown. The exhibition had over 50,000 visitors.
2nd Heaven Biennial
The second biennial in 2009 was called Heaven . Works by 150 international artists were shown. The exhibition had over 75,000 visitors. The curators were Nadja Argyropoulou, Diana Baldon, Christopher Marinos, Chus Martinez , Dimitris Papaioannou, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz and Zafos Xagoraris . The exhibition design came from Andreas Angelidakis . The main exhibition venue was the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex .
3rd MONODROME Biennial
The 3rd Biennale took place between October 23 and December 11, 2011 and was under the heading MONODROME . One of the curators was Nicolas Bourriaud . The exhibition venues were the Diplareios School, the Art Center and the Eleftherios Venizelos Museum .
4th Agora Biennial
The 4th Biennale took place between September 29th and December 1st, 2013 under the heading Agora (Greek for market ). One exhibition venue was the building of the former Athens Stock Exchange . The team of curators included a .: Viviana Checchia, Charles Esche, Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Christopher Marinos, Galini Notti, Katerina Tselou and Poka-Yio.
