Beat Wyss

Beat Wyss (born October 29, 1947 in Basel ) is a Swiss art historian and professor of art history and media theory at the Karlsruhe University of Design ( HfG Karlsruhe ).

Life

Beat Wyss studied art history , philosophy and German literature in Zurich . From 1980 to 1983 he was a scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation at the Free University of Berlin and at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma . From 1986 to 1989 he worked as a lecturer at Artemis Verlag (Zurich and Munich ) and as a lecturer for architectural and cultural history at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH).

After a substitute professorship at the University of Bonn and a stay as a visiting scholar at the Getty Center in Santa Monica , Wyss was appointed professor of art history at the Art History Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum in 1991. A visiting professorship at Cornell University , Ithaca, NY (1996) was followed by a call to the University of Stuttgart , where he headed the Institute for Art History until 2003. Since 2003 he has been professor for art history and media theory at the State University of Design in Karlsruhe, where he was also the spokesperson for the graduate school “Image - Body - Medium. An anthropological perspective ”acted. From 2008 to 2011 he was Professorial Fellow at the Swiss Institute for Art Research in Zurich . From February to June 2013 he was a Kress Fellow in the Literature of Art at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute , Williamstown, Massachusetts. He has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 2001 .

In 2001 Wyss was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne .
