Life

Zielinski studied primarily at the chair of the Austrian mechanical engineer and radio theorist Friedrich Knilli at the Technical University (TU) Berlin , whose media science department emerged from the Institute for Language in the Technical Age ( SPRITZ ). In the early 1970s he wrote his first media-related articles as editor of the “marburger blätter”. In 1979 he shot the documentary 16mm film Responses to HOLOCAUST in Western Germany as a writer and director , with which he traveled through the USA. In the same year he completed his studies with a thesis on Jud Süß director Veit Harlan , which was published in 1981 as his first monograph. In the 1980s he worked as a freelance author before installing the first course in media studies and media consulting at the TU Berlin with Friedrich Knilli in 1982.

In 1989, Zielinski was appointed professor for audiovisual at the University of Salzburg . With Peter Lilienthal , Dietmar Kamper , Eckhart Stein and others, he installed and designed the European Summer Academy for Film and Media Art at the Berlin Academy of the Arts until 1994 . In 1993 he was appointed professor for communication and media studies at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM), appointed its founding rector in 1994 and elected its first rector in 1999. At the KHM, he essentially established an undergraduate degree in the tension between art, science and technology. From 1995 to 1999 he created and directed the Festival Digitale together with Nils Röller at the Cinématheque in Cologne. Zielinski has been back in teaching and research since 2002. Since 2005 he has been building a loose international network under the title Variantology , which is dedicated to the exploration of the depths of the relationships between the arts, sciences and technologies. From 2007 he researched and taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and was most recently professor of media theory with a focus on "Archeology and Variantology of the Arts and the Media". In 2016, Zielinski was appointed as successor to Peter Sloterdijk as rector of the State University of Design Karlsruhe , which he held until March 31, 2018.

Siegfried Zielinski is a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts , the Berlin Academy of the Arts , the European Film Academy (EFA), the Magic Lantern Society of Great Britain and Honorary Senator of the Institute for Media Archeology in Hainburg (Austria).
