Friedrich Knilli (2009)

Friedrich Knilli (born Friedrich Venier on February 14, 1930 in Fehring , Styria ; died on or before February 2, 2022 ) was a German-Austrian media scholar .

Life

Friedrich Knilli studied mechanical engineering in Graz and then psychology ( doctorate 1959) and general literature ( habilitation 1972) in Tübingen , Munich and Graz . From 1960 he lived as a freelance writer , working mainly for the Austrian and South German radio .

Knilli is best known for his book Das Hörspiel . Means and Possibilities of a Total Sound Play (1961), in which he took a counter-position to the “radio play pope” of the time, Heinz Schwitzke , and his definition of the radio play as a pure play on words.

For the screenplay for Auf, Sozialisten, close the ranks! Deutsches Arbeitertheater 1867–1918 (television play document, NDR 1970) Knilli received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 1971 .

From 1972 until his retirement , Friedrich Knilli was a professor of general literature with a focus on media studies at the Technical University of Berlin . In 1986 he founded the main course "Diploma Media Consulting", which he headed until 1998.

Since the mid-1970s, his other research focuses have included the portrayal of Jews in the media. In a research project, he and his research group examined viewer reactions to the broadcast of the mini-TV series Holocaust - The History of the White Family based on the letters to the WDR .

Knilli wrote the biography Ich war Jud Süss about the actor Ferdinand Marian , the lead in the anti-Semitic propaganda film Jud Süss (1940) directed by Veit Harlan . Based on this template, Oskar Roehler shot his 2009 film Jud Süss – Film ohne Conscience , which ran in competition at the 60th Berlinale in 2010 .

In a brief review by Deutschlandfunk Kultur after his death, it says, among other things: about Knilli: "For him, the media debate about the Holocaust was a kitschy version of Auschwitz."

Friedrich Knilli died a few days before his 92nd birthday.
