I was Jud Suss - The story of the film star Ferdinand Marian is a biography about the actor Ferdinand Marian by Friedrich Knilli .

Ferdinand Marian was one of the most famous and busiest actors in the Third Reich . Through his role of Joseph Suess Oppenheimer in the Nazi propaganda film Jew Suss by Veit Harlan the person of Ferdinand Marian forever with is Holocaust connected. In his biography Knilli portrays the person and the actor Marian under the influence of this anti-Jewish melodrama: “Knilli shows how Marian's fate took a devastating turn through this role. At the same time, the author examines the perfidious functioning of the film Jud Suss - especially its peculiar elements of anti-Semitic eroticism ”.

The author Friedrich Knilli is an internationally known media scientist and has been dealing with the depiction of the Holocaust in the media for several decades. In the 200 pages of the book, Knilli has included many details on the topics of propaganda, film and anti-Semitism in the Third Reich, using the example of Ferdinand Marian. The book is the result of extensive source studies and personal contacts with eyewitnesses and relatives. Around forty images of original film posters, programs, photos of the scenes and film reviews illustrate the use of the film Jud Suss as a propaganda tool of the Nazis. One is about the drama of a talented child who becomes a film star - a man who (as Axel von Ambesser put it in his funeral speech for Marian) was "a legitimate successor to the great Austrian actors". And the second story is about the role of a Jew, which the artist only reluctantly accepted for Veit Harlan's film and which was his undoing. " Friedrich Knilli.

The Marian biography was filmed in 2009 by Oskar Roehler with the title Jud Süß - Film Without Conscience and was shown in competition at the 2010 Berlinale .
