Luigi "Gigi" Datome (born November 27, 1987 in Montebelluna ) is an Italian basketball player . He plays for Olimpia Milano in Serie A .

Career

In his youth Datome played basketball in Olbia , the city where he grew up. He showed his talent early on when he helped his youth team to titles and made his debut in Serie B2 at the age of 15. As a result, he drew the attention of many higher-class clubs such as B. Benetton Treviso and Virtus Bologna on itself. However, he decided on the then still rather unknown Montepaschi Siena association . In his first year he won three titles (one with the youth team, one with the farm team and one with the first team). In the two seasons that followed, however, he was only used sparsely in Serie A and in the Euroleague . That's why he decided to move to the second division Scafati Basket during the 2006/07 season .

In September 2008 he signed a two-year contract with Virtus Roma. After the 2008/09 season, he was voted the best U22 player in the league.

On July 16, 2013, Datome signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Pistons. Before this contract expired, he was transferred to the Boston Celtics in February 2015 . After 55 NBA games (3.4 points / game), he left the North American league and moved to Fenerbahçe Ülker in July 2015 . In 2016, 2017 and 2018 he reached the final of the Euroleague with the Turkish team and won it in 2017. In his five years at Fenerbahçe, the captain of the Italian national team was three times Turkish champion and three times cup winner. At the end of June 2020, Olimpia Milan announced its commitment.
