Clegg & Guttmann is an artist duo consisting of Michael Clegg (* 1957 in Dublin ) and Yair Martin Guttmann (* 1957 in Jerusalem ).

Michael Clegg is professor for artistic photography at the State University for Design in Karlsruhe.

Yair Martin Guttmann teaches as a professor in the Department of Art and Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

life and work

Clegg & Guttmann went to New York in 1978 to study with Joseph Kosuth at the School of Visual Arts there. Her artistic profession is photographic and film productions as well as object installations in public space. Both have been working together since 1980 when they were still studying.

In the German-speaking world, they are best known for their freely accessible book display cases under the project name The Open Library , for example in Graz in 1991, in the Augsburg Court Garden in 2001 or in the Jewish Cemetery in Krems : Every visitor is allowed to take books out of the public bookcases and should also include your own. This activating inclusion of the viewer is an almost universal principle of the installations by Clegg & Guttmann.

Works by the artist duo have already been or are represented in several hundred internationally renowned exhibitions, galleries and collections in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, also Western Europe and the USA (including at the documenta and the Venice Biennale ). In 1989 they showed their work at the Torino Fotografia '89 Biennale Internazionale together with David Hockney and Gottfried Helnwein .
