history

In 1878 a gold coin was found at Gaswerkgasse 30, and bones from around 20 skeletons were found. It is believed that this cemetery came to an end with the expulsion of the Jews in 1421 . A vineyard name Judenfreithoff has been documented since 1460. A second Jewish cemetery was created on the Turnerberg in 1853. Desecrations in the interwar period resulted in the cemetery being abandoned in 1936. The remains of the dead were taken to the main cemetery on Wiener Strasse. This was opened in 1880/81 at Wiener Straße 115.

Due to the expulsion and extermination of Jews during the Nazi era , the Jewish cemetery is primarily an object of remembrance today. The Jewish cemetery was desecrated during the National Socialist era . The regular records of where which people are buried have been lost. At least three rows of graves were removed during the war to make way for a barrack camp for prisoners of war.

With references from contemporary witnesses and with excavations under the direction of the Viennese religious community, some clarity could be created. The cemetery was renovated in 1988. In the course of the clearing work, the memorial stone for the fallen of the First World War came to light. Robert Kohn reported that he and Max Auspitz, as two Jewish secondary school students in the interwar period, received an order from the drawing teacher to lay a wreath on a memorial day. Robert Kohn: We went, it was way out, but we went with the wreath. We came to the cemetery and it was locked. There was also no guard. We looked for a low place and climbed over the wall and laid the wreath .

In 1995, a memorial by the sculptor and photo artist Hans Kupelwieser , a 42-meter-long metal threshold in which the names of the 127 Krems Jews who were expelled or murdered, were carved, was placed in the entrance area of the cemetery. Paul Grosz , then President of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien , expressed thanks and appreciation. If someone wants to enter the cemetery, they either have to cross the threshold or walk along in front of it in order to be able to enter the cemetery at the end. This set a sign for the dead and the displaced of the lost Jewish community of Krems. With initiatives with active students, the cemetery is kept in a worthy condition.

In 2004, three public bookcases were built in the cemetery by the artist duo Clegg & Guttmann .

Since 2006, a debate has been taking place between politicians at federal and state level as well as experts about the restoration and preservation - Washington Agreement of 23 January 2001 - of the Jewish cemeteries in Austria.
