Paul Grosz

Paul Grosz (* July 18, 1925 in Vienna ; † August 29, 2009 ibid) was the long-time President of the Israelite Religious Community in Vienna (1987–1998).

Life

Paul Grosz was born the son of a master furrier and, thanks to the help of a Jewish police officer, he survived the Nazi era hidden in Vienna. After the end of the war, he also learned the profession of a furrier before he made up his Matura and began studying chemistry. In 1950 he emigrated to the USA , but returned to Vienna in 1955 when his father fell ill. After his death, he took over the skinning in Margaretenstrasse.

Paul Grosz got involved in the religious community. In 1970 he was elected to the board for the first time. In 1987 he succeeded Ivan Hacker as President and held this office until 1998, when he was replaced by Ariel Muzicant . In his eleven-year term he encouraged u. a. the modernization of the parents' and care home ( Maimonides Center ) or new school buildings and facilities. 1995 saw the founding of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism , 1996, followed by international media interest was "Mauerbach" auction held at which the ICG in 1995 restituted artworks and objects for the victims of the Holocaust were auctioned, the Austrian Jews were robbed by the Nazis. In 1955 these were handed over to the Republic of Austria as "ownerless" property. Grosz also tried "to encourage every member of the community to be more self-confident in private and social life."

  • Awarded the title of Hofrat (March 1992)
  • Appointment as a citizen of the City of Vienna (December 17, 1998; presentation on March 19, 1999)
  • Appointment as honorary president of the IKG (1987)
