Johannes Rudolphi (born October 5, 1877 in Potsdam , † January 21, 1950 in Potsdam-Babelsberg ) was a German landscape painter of Post-Impressionism .

Life

Rudolphi was the son of the Potsdam doctor Wilhelm Rudolphi and a descendant of the Westphalian painter Johann Georg Rudolphi . He decided to become a painter and enrolled in May 1899 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for the nature class under Gabriel von Hackl . After returning soon, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin . During this time his interest in landscape painting matured. In 1901 Rudolphi married the Potsdam painter Margarete Haeberlin , daughter of the court building officer Franz Haeberlin , with whom he had two sons; the later architect Hellmut, born in 1902, and Wolfram , born in 1906, who followed in his parents' footsteps as a painter and graphic artist.

Rudolphi finished his studies in 1902. The family living in Berlin often spent the summer months in the so-called “Green House” in Potsdam's New Garden , from where the freelance artist went on painter excursions into the surrounding area. In the following year he traveled through Brandenburg and the Uckermark and in the summer of 1904 to Küstrin and the Neumark . Johannes Rudolphi made his debut at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1905 with the portrait of the President of the District Court I and in the same year went to study landscapes in the Black Forest . In 1906 he sent the art exhibition with the painting Evening at Sacrower See and in 1908 with his self-portrait in pastel . After joining the Berlin Secession under Max Liebermann's leadership , he took part in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition for the last time in 1909. Rudolphi continued his artistic work from 1910 in his own house with a studio in Berlin-Schlachtensee , where he lived until his death.

Rudolphi mainly painted Brandenburg landscapes, which he depicted in numerous paintings with their seasonal changes and lighting moods. His favorite motifs were the lakes in Berlin, Potsdam and the surrounding area, especially the Golmer Luch . The First World War restricted his artistic activity, so that during these years he only made pencil sketches. After the war he developed a successful creative phase in which his work met with great approval, until he was only able to paint sporadically in the 1940s due to an eye disease. Rudolphi died in 1950 in the Oberlinhaus in Potsdam-Babelsberg and, like his wife Margarete four years later, found his final resting place in the Bornstedt cemetery in the shared grave of the in-laws Fanny and Franz Haeberlin.
