The Königsweg ( listen ? / I ) is a traffic route in the Berlin districts of Zehlendorf , Nikolassee and Wannsee . Except for some road sections, it is mostly a forest and gravel path. Audio file / audio sample

history

In 1730 it was laid out as an expressway by order of King Friedrich Wilhelm I. The name goes back to the fact that the connection was built with royal money and used by himself as a shortcut. This was connected with the simultaneous expansion of Potsdam as a garrison city for the “ soldier king ”.

The address book 1900 includes the Königsweg (for Zehlendorf) from Königstraße followed by construction sites with plot 1 of the landscape gardener Hoppe. The 1914 address book contains maps showing the 'Königs-Weg' route through Zehlendorf and Nikolassee.

course

Change of path equipment in Zehlendorf (Hohentwielersteig)

It was a simple sandy path in the Heinersdorfer Heide, which was cut as a straight aisle through the forest (later: Düppeler Forst ). It began in the historic center of Zehlendorf and led via Kohlhasenbrück to Potsdam. The section from the village exit of Zehlendorf (since 1920: "Zehlendorf-Eiche" at the corner of Potsdamer / Onkel-Tom-Straße) to the bridge of the Wannseebahn is called "Königstraße", from there to Clauertstraße it is one under the name "" “Königsweg” dedicated drivable road.

Then it continues partly as a forest path to the Teltow Canal , which was laid out in 1906 , from there to the city limits again as a dedicated road. In the urban area of Potsdam it led in a straight line to the city center (after 1960 as Rudolf-Breitscheid-Strasse and Babelsberger Strasse) and ended at the Long Bridge .

The main line was built parallel to and immediately adjacent to the Königsweg in 1838, later the Düppel and Griebnitzsee stations were built near the Königsweg .

To the east of the S-Bahn line, Königsweg merges into Königstrasse within Zehlendorf. The latter leads to Sderotplatz (Martinkirchstrasse and Potsdamer Chaussee). The Königsweg lies dead straight to the west and partially forms the city limits.

use

As a road south of the "Waldhaus settlement" in Nikolassee, continuing (in the picture) on the southern edge of the forest cemetery

The sandy Königsweg suddenly lost its importance when in 1792 a road - i.e. a somewhat paved road - was completed in the section from Zehlendorf to Potsdam ( Bundesstraße 1 with another Königstraße ) and the Glienicke Bridge and the bridge between the Kleiner and Großer Wannsee were built . Road users accepted that the carts had to take the arduous climb over the Schäferberg and that a toll had to be paid for bridges and the road.

Street directory

Memorial plaque on Königsweg 308 (depiction of pieces of stone )

The Königsweg is listed in the Berlin street directory in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district with a length of 6382 meters as dedicated under street number 2514. The districts Zehlendorf 1026 meters and 3538 meters to the district Nikolassee, 1816 meters are in Wannsee. The course is continuously assigned to the RBS class "STRA", which includes regulations on road equipment and development. The other classifications give an expression of the remaining use and the state of development of the Königsweg. In the street part (StEP) of the urban development plan, 180 meters and another 140 meters in Wannsee (locality Kohlhasenbrück) are included as regional road connections , which places demands on the specialist office in the district office. The other sections remain uncategorized ("V") but differ according to the Okstra class . In Zehlendorf, the Königsweg is marked as "G" (municipal road). The Nikolassee district is divided into 992 meters with “F” (forest path) and 2123 meters with “W” (hiking path), the remaining part is classified as “G”. In Nikolassee there is also the 50 meters of the Königswegbrücke (street number: 7316), which is also rated as “F” in the RBS class BRUE according to Okstra. In Wannsee, the section of the regional road in Kohlhasenbrück and a further 140 meters as "G", 290 meters as "F" and 1060 meters as class "W".

Königswegbrücke

Königswegbrücke over the A 115 at the city limits

The Königswegbrücke has led the Königsweg over today's A 115 since the AVUS connection to the Berliner Ring was built . Particular interest in this bridge arose when it became an observation point for east and west due to its location in the area of the wall. An information board on the Berlin Wall Trail at the Königswegbrücke shows several photos to remind you of the historical situation.

In the further course the Königsweg crosses the S-Bahn ditch of the Friedhofsbahn in the Düppel forest , which connected the Wannsee and Stahnsdorf stations until the Wall was built. Along the Königsweg there was a metal fence in the area of the city limits, which left the path on the West Berlin side accessible. The wall itself stood further south, so that there was no man's land until the former route of the motorway north of today's A 115, which was closed in 1969.

Development of the land

Königsweg 50: Distillery of the
Düppel manor

According to postcode areas, Königsweg is in 14109, 14129 and 14163. Most of the buildings are separated from Königsweg by a strip of forest and are addressed differently. Exceptions are the residential quarters on the road sections Königsweg 58–82 (straight, west of Gut Düppel, Zehlendorf), Königsweg 200–250 (straight, Nikolassee) between Am Waldhaus and Katteweg. In addition, the KGA 'Hoppe' and the Düppel riding arena are located on Königsweg, on the south side of which properties 3–53 (odd, residential and commercial buildings) and 61–69 (odd, Free University , towards Clauertstrasse) belong to the district of Zehlendorf. In Nikolassee, the museum village Düppel and Krumme Fenn border in the south , the following residential buildings are addressed to Lloyd-G.-Wells-Straße. The KGA 'Schlachtensee' follows the forest to the west, on the north side 138–142 are the facilities of the forest cemetery Zehlendorf . To the west of the motorway bridge ( Dreilinden ), the Königsweg is the city limits for almost three kilometers. The change from Nikolassee to Wannsee is halfway on Stahnsdorfer Damm.

The height of the city limits deviates from the Kurfürstenweg to the south. The next 990 meters of the Königsweg completely on Berlin city area through the forest end in front of the Teltow Canal at the parking lot in the Wannsee locality of Kohlhasenbrück . However, the Königsweg (since the construction of the Teltow Canal) has been led over the Nathan Bridge. As a regionally important road in good condition, the Königsweg continues to Bernhard-Beyer-Strasse, which runs next to the Wetzlaer Bahn and as a road to Steinstücke belongs to the city area. In the opposite direction, the Königsweg from Machnower / Bäkestrasse to Nathanbrücke is marked as a dead end . The Königsweg originally crossed the tracks of the Wetzlarer Bahn and the Wannseebahn and led to Potsdam- Babelsberger Rudolf-Breitscheid-Strasse and Berlin's Neue Kreisstrasse. With the connection of Steinstück, which was previously a Berlin exclave in GDR territory, via a road next to the railway line from the curve in 1972, the Königsweg was of no connection importance, especially since the Königsweg with a route to Babelsberg lost its further route at the latest when the Wall was built and has not been to the new since then County road is carried out. The properties Königsweg 298–332b (even) and 301–315 (odd) are in Kohlhasenbrück, the area following number 315 is already in Brandenburg .

End of the Königsweg at the main line in Kohlhasenbrück, formerly in the area of the wall

The crossing of the long-distance railway line (Wetzlarer Bahn) and the S-Bahn (Wannseebahn) with the road outside of Berlin in the Potsdam area no longer exists (see the picture ). The residential building Königsweg 340 on this old route is in Berlin, but the (not developed) road area would belong to Brandenburg (Potsdam city area). The house at Königsweg 340 on the corner of Neue Kreisstrasse was addressed as Neue Kreisstrasse 1 in the mid-1950s. The interrupted and existing road in the southwest of Kohlhasenbrück is a holdover from the times of the Berlin Wall .

At Königsweg 49/55 (odd) and 50 is the former manor Düppel , whose borders are in the west and northwest through Clauertstraße and Lindenthaler Allee, in the north the Potsdamer Chaussee, in the east the Wannseebahn and the old Potsdam main railway in the south. The old estate area extends on both sides of the Königsweg. After the Second World War , the site was transferred to the Free University , so that new institute buildings were built around 1970. The ensemble Königsweg 49–55 (odd) and 50 of the manor is listed as a monument. The list includes the houses Königsweg 49/55 (accommodation for the former farm workers and day laborers) across from Königsweg 50, the distillery of the Düppel manor and the manor house of the manor. In contrast to the manor house, the brick-faced distillery is an unadorned industrial building. Built by Bensch in 1838, Prince Friedrich Carl von Prussia established the estate as a manor and a stud in 1865 (origin of the veterinary faculty). Later the SS- Reichs-Reiterführer-Schule was established. The riding facility is located west of the new university building.
