Aron Menczer

Aron Menczer (born April 18, 1917 in Vienna ; † October 7, 1943 in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp ) was head of the Vienna Youth Aliyah from 1939 until it was dissolved in May 1941 .

Aron Menczer was born to Bluma and Simcha Menczer on April 18, 1917, the fourth of six sons. As a teenager he entered Gordonia and in 1938 became Madrich of the Youth Aliyah. In 1939 he took over the management of the Vienna branch of the Jugendalijah from Jehuda Weissbrod . In this role, Menczer took thousands of Jewish children out of the country, mostly to Palestine , but also to Scandinavia or with child transports to Great Britain. Among those he saved were personalities like Ora Kedem , Paul Grosz and Ari Rath .

On September 24, 1942, Aron Menczer was deported to Theresienstadt . A. together with Desider Friedmann and Robert Stricker . At the first meeting of the united Hechaluz -Theresienstadt, Menczer was elected to the board in November of the same year.

On August 24, 1943, a transport with 1,264 orphans and 20 carers from the liquidated ghetto Bialystok reached Theresienstadt. 53 volunteers reported in Theresienstadt to look after these orphans, among them Ottla Kafka and Aron Menczer. After the exchange did not take place, the surviving 1196 orphans and their 53 volunteers were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau on October 5th. They were gassed immediately after arriving on October 7, 1943 .
