Alfred Stern (lawyer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Stern (born August 29, 1831 in Vienna ; † December 1, 1918 there ) was an Austrian lawyer and Viennese local politician. Stern was one of the sharpest opponents of Vienna's mayor Karl Lueger .

Live and act

Alfred Stern studied law at the University of Vienna and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. From 1868 he worked as court and court advocate, from 1888 to 1900 as a liberal mandate for the second district, Leopoldstadt , in the city council of the city of Vienna, where he did not find an equal successor as budget officer  .

Starting in 1888, Stern was on the board of the Vienna Jewish Community for thirty-one years , 15 of which as its president. He fought resolutely against all Zionist efforts and was therefore referred to by Theodor Herzl as "the little corner politician of the religious community" (December 2, 1902).

During his term of office, among other things, the Augarten grounds for the Jewish children's hospital ( Tempelgasse ) were secured and in 1917 the new Jewish cemetery ( Vienna Central Cemetery , IV Gate) was built. Stern's main concerns, the construction of a large temple in the inner city and the construction of a new official building for the IKG , were controversial and could not be realized due to the economic conditions during the First World War .

On November 5, 1918, Alfred Stern told the board of directors of the Viennese Israelite religious community that he had previously announced his resignation, saying that he could not agree to the recognition of the newly founded (Zionist-oriented) Jewish National Council for German Austria resulting from a compromise proposal. The board of directors accepted the declaration of resignation by a majority of votes. A short time later, Stern became honorary president of the IKG, to which he left a well-known anonymous foundation.

Alfred Stern's brother, Victor Stern (*  May 4,  1837 in Vienna; †  February 3,  1913 there ), turned to writing , partly influenced by his acquaintance with Friedrich Hebbel (1813–1863), and published under the pseudonym E. Stella some tragedies.

Alfred Stern was the uncle of the composer Oscar Straus , whom he raised after the early death of his father and who was present at Stern's 80th birthday party, among other things.
