The Majiayao culture ( Chinese  馬 家窰 文化  /  马 家窑 文化 , Pinyin Mǎjiāyáo wénhuà , English Majiayao Culture ) is a late Neolithic culture in the region of the Upper Yellow River in Gansu and Qinghai , China . It is based on the radiocarbon method for the period from 3000 to 2000 BC. Dated.

It used to be called the " Yangshao culture of Gansu " (甘肃 仰韶文化 Gānsù Yǎngsháo wénhuà). The three types of majiayao (马 家窑 Mǎjiāyáo), Banshan (半山 Bànshān) and Machang (马 厂 Mǎchǎng) were previously distinguished according to their various sites, but today the finds of the latter two sites of the Banshan-Machang culture (半山 - 马厂 文化 Bànshān-Mǎchǎng wénhuà) included.

Majiayao culture was first discovered in Majiayao, Lintao County (临洮 县), Gansu Province in 1923 , hence its name. It was mainly widespread in the catchment area of the Tao He (洮河 Táo Hé) and Daxie He (大 夏河 Dàxià Hé) rivers in Gansu Province and the Huang Shui (湟 水 Huáng Shuǐ) in Qinghai Province .

Agriculture was their main economic factor. Stone tools and bone implements were used. The ceramics are often painted with black decoration, the patterns are not identical to those of the colored ceramics ( cǎitáo ) of the Yangshao culture .

The Majiayao site (马 家窑 遗址 Mǎjiāyáo yízhǐ) in Lintao County ( Gansu ) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1988 , the Linjia site (Linjia yizhi 林 家 遗址) in the Dongxiang Autonomous Okrug (Gansu) since 2006 .
