Michael Schirner

Michael Schirner (born May 16, 1941 in Chemnitz ) is a German artist and communication designer as well as managing director of the Schirner Zang Institute of Art and Media GmbH.

Life

Schirner studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK) with Max Bense , Max Bill , Bazon Brock and Kilian Breier . In 1968, when the students took to the streets to protest against capitalism and Schirner left the university after the scandal over his costume party without costumes, the artist went into advertising.

He was professor at the Karlsruhe University of Art and Design , the Faculty of Design , Kyushu University Fukuoka, Japan, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China, and he is honorary professor for communication design at the Bremen University of the Arts at the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM). Schirner teaches at the CAFA, Central Academy of Fine Arts Beijing, China, and the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University Fukuoka, Japan.

Schirner has been working with Kexin Zang, a Chinese artist and communication designer, since 2002. In 2011 she became managing director of the Schirner Zang Institute of Art und Media GmbH . In 2011 Schirner and Zang got married.

In 2012 his wife founded the Schirner Zang Foundation . The non-profit foundation promotes art and culture, science and research, education and training and the exchange between Europe and Asia.

Schirner is managing director of the Schirner Zang Institute of Art and Media GmbH and board member of the non-profit Schirner Zang Foundation . He is an honorary member of the Art Directors Club (ADC) for Germany and a member of the Hall of Fame for German Advertising .

Artistic creation

The artist and designer has always been committed to overcoming the boundaries between applied and free art. By equating advertising and art, the principle of radical reduction of image and text, making the invisible visible, working on the artist's self-abolition as an author, he renewed art and advertising.
