history

The company was founded on September 2, 1949 by Werner Eckart as a limited partnership in Munich . His father Johannes Eckart had been a canning manufacturer since 1868.

In 1964 more than 50 million DM were turned over, in 1965 80 million. Pfanni employed 1,300 people and processed three million quintals (150,000  tons ) of potatoes a year.

In 1993 the company was sold to CPC Germany, later renamed Bestfoods, to which Knorr also belonged. In 2000 this group of companies was taken over by Unilever , which since then has been selling potato products such as potato dumplings , dumpling dough, purees , ready meals and gnocchi under the Pfanni brand . The dumpling range is also rounded off by bread dumplings .

On the former site of the Pfanni company behind Munich's Ostbahnhof , a 90,000 m² party area was created in 1996 after the company moved to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was called “Kunstpark Ost” and was used as a “ cult factory ” from 2003 to 2016 , primarily for events for the younger generation Audience offered. The "Werksviertel-Mitte", a new city quarter in the Werksviertel, has been under construction here since 2017 . The entire quarter will provide space for traffic and parks as well as office, cultural and residential buildings with more than a thousand apartments for around 3000 residents.

The Potato Museum , which is supported by the Otto Eckart Foundation, opened in 1996 on the former factory premises . Consul a. H. Otto Eckart, the son of the company founder, was the company's boss and owner until it was sold to CPC. Until his death on June 5, 2016, he was a director of the foundation named after him .

In Stavenhagen , Pfanni operates as Pfanni GmbH & Co. OHG. In 2007 more than 300 people were employed there. They process around 150,000 tons of potatoes a year. Another plant was located in Cloppenburg (Lower Saxony), which traded as Pfanni-Werke GmbH & Co. KG. It was taken over by the Wernsing Feinkost company and production was relocated to Addrup .

The "Pfanni Tower" in Cloppenburg (2002)

The Berlin band Element of Crime set Pfanni a musical monument in 2009 on the album “Always there, where you are, I'm never”; in his song “Kopf aus dem Fenster” it says: “What is Pfanni for Cloppenburg, you are for me”. In the Cloppenburg district of Emstekerfeld, a 76 meter high factory tower is reminiscent of Pfanni. The tower was built in 1963 and was part of the then newly built Spreda Nahrungsmittelwerke AG , which was co-founded by the businessman and CDU member of the Bundestag, J. Hermann Siemer . In 1961, Siemer acquired the rights to a cold drying process for pulverizing foodstuffs in Switzerland, which he wanted to implement with the participation of the wine distiller Ludwig Eckes . Spreda AG did not achieve profitability in the production of quick meals such as kitchen-ready potato products and gave up production in 1965. Pfanni later took over the factory premises; the "Spreda spray tower" built for the drying process became a symbol of the city as the "Pfanni tower".

Trivia

In Tomas Cramer's crime novel “Novemberblut” , a key scene takes place on the Pfanni tower, which is also described there.
