Zimbo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zimbo is a German brand for meat and sausage products as well as convenience food products. Since September 2012 the Zimbo brand has belonged to Bell Germany in Seevetal , a subsidiary of the Swiss Bell AG , which in turn is majority owned by the Swiss Coop cooperative. The name is derived from the telex code zim.bo, where Zim stands for the owner Max Zimmermann, .bo was the telex code for Bochum , where the company had been based since 1971.

history

The Zimbo company was founded in 1953 by Max Zimmermann in Witten. He began with a direct sale of local meat and sausage products to the grocery store by fresh service. In 1960, the first sausage came on the market in self-service packaging. This made Zimbo a pioneer in the field of meat and sausage products for the self-service shelf. Zimmermann's son Reinhold moved the company headquarters to Bochum in 1971. In 1976 the first production facility for regional specialties went into operation in Börger in Emsland. Today, Zimbo products are also manufactured in Suhl, Thuringia, and Bad Wünnenberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. There are also two further production sites in Eastern Europe: Perbál (Hungary) and Krakow (Poland). Today the brand is internationally active in almost all Eastern European countries as well as in Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. Since 2008, Zimbo has been part of the listed Bell AG (Switzerland) based in Basel, the majority of which is owned by the Coop cooperative (Switzerland).

range

The Zimbo brand covers the entire spectrum of sausages and cold cuts. There is also a wide range of snacks and convenience products. An important part of the range are regional sausage specialties, some with a seal of origin, such as the Original Thuringian Rostbratwurst or the Original Bündnerfleisch .

Awards

The Fineo Hauchschnitt line received the “Excellent Food” seal of approval from the LifeCare initiative and was named Product of the Year 2009 by the magazine Lebensmittel Praxis . The German Agricultural Society (DLG) has awarded more than 150 Zimbo products gold, silver or bronze medals in recent years.

Consumer criticism

In the context of a television report by SpiegelTV on November 22, 2010, an above-average underweight was found in the convenience product hot dogs. Out of 138 samples purchased, over 48 samples had too low a product weight. A former employee also reports that additional empty packaging was systematically weighed in quality control in order to achieve the minimum weight. In a written statement, Zimbo pointed out that the weight differences between the samples were within the tolerance range permitted by law. Zimbo rejected the fact that empty packages were weighed as additional weights as untrue. In October 2016, a Zimbo salami attracted attention because of its high mineral oil content.
