history
The Mannheimer insurance company was founded in Mannheim in 1879. For the first twenty years she was active as a pure transport insurer. In 1899 the insurance business was expanded to include accident, liability, burglary and glass. In 1923, Kronos Deutsche Lebensversicherungs-Bank AG, founded just a year earlier, was taken over, which later became Mannheimer Lebensversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG.
Mannheimer Krankenversicherung AG was founded in 1991 and Mannheimer AG Holding as the parent company in 1998. In 1999 mamax Lebensversicherung AG was founded as an online life insurer. In 2002/03 Mannheimer Lebensversicherung AG got into economic difficulties due to speculation in stocks. As a result, more than 300,000 contracts had to be transferred to the newly founded Protektor Lebensversicherungs-AG , a rescue company for the insurance industry, and the Austrian UNIQA took over more than 75 percent of the shares in Mannheimer AG Holding.
In 2005 Mannheimer Krankenversicherung AG became a direct subsidiary of the Austrian UNIQA, but has been part of the Mannheimer AG Holding again since 2009.
In June 2012, UNIQA sold the shares it held (around 91.7 percent) in Mannheimer AG Holding to the Continentale Insurance Association . With effect from March 11, 2013, Mannheimer AG Holding was merged with Deutsche Internet Versicherung AG (div). The announced merger was entered in the Dortmund commercial register on March 11th. The div thus became the legal successor of Mannheimer AG Holding and sole shareholder of Mannheimer Versicherungen. Trading in the shares of Mannheimer AG Holding (previously under ISIN DE0008428004) was then ended.
In August 2014, BaFin approved the merger of mamax Lebensversicherung with Continentale Lebensversicherung, which was completed in October 2014 with an entry in the commercial register.
Then the Mannheimer Krankenversicherung AG was transferred to the Continentale Krankenversicherung a. G. merged. This step became effective with the entry in the commercial register on August 24, 2016.
building
In 1959, the architects Albrecht Lange and Hans Mitzlaff built the main insurance building in an exposed location at the eastern entrance to Mannheim. The eleven-story building was designed as one of the first in Germany to have open-plan offices. At night were the lighted windows of an oversized M . In 1991, Mannheimer moved into the new main building on the opposite side of the street. It was built according to the plans of Helmut Jahn and has a striking 15-storey corner tower. Another building followed in 2004 based on plans by Helmut Jahn.
