Marie Jo Lafontaine

Marie Jo Lafontaine [ lafɔ̃ˈtɛn ] (* 1950 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian photographer and video artist .

Life and awards

Studied at the École Nationale Supérieuere d'Architecture et des Arts Visuels in Brussels from 1975 to 1979. She then won the Prix ​​de la Jeune Peinture Belge in Brussels in 1979 and the Prix ​​de la Critique in Antwerp in 1979 .

Monochrome textile wall works and paintings by her hand are created.

She also began video art in 1979 with the work "La batteuse de palplanches". In 1982 she won the first video award " Meatball " in Amsterdam . In 1985 she received a scholarship from the Institute of Arts and Humanities . Her international breakthrough came in 1987 when she took part in Documenta 8 in Kassel with the video installation Les larmes dácier , and a year later her works were shown at Vorsatz 2 , the second major exhibition at Galerie Vorsetzen . In the following years, environment-like multimedia installations such as Viktoria and Passio emerged . 1990 visiting professor at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg . Since 1992 professor at the Karlsruhe University of Design . In 1995 she received the Darmstadt City Art Prize . She was the cultural ambassador for Flanders in 1998 and 1999 and lives in Brussels.
