Projection on the Eurotower

The SkyArena was an event from 3 to 5 June 2006 in Frankfurt am Main before the FIFA - 2006 FIFA World Cup took place. During the production , which lasted approx. 45 minutes , 40 high-performance projectors projected images onto screens from a distance of up to 800 m, which were mounted on a total of nine Frankfurt skyscrapers and thus formed a projection area of 10,000 m². The images were supplemented by music, some of which was specially composed for this purpose, as well as sound documents and noises to create a suitable staging.

Program parts

The event was divided into two parts. In the first part, the so-called overture to the 2006 Football World Cup , around 500 pictures of football events since the first World Cup were shown. Up to 90 spotlights accompanied this first part in the form of a light show , in addition to a compilation of original reporters' comments , fan chants and a composition by the German-Iranian composer Parviz Mir-Ali , which was recorded by the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra . The responsible creative team around the Frankfurt design agency Atelier Markgraph consisted of a. from theater director Titus Georgi , film director Philipp Stölzl , lighting designer Gunther Hecker and hr2 presenter Martin Maria Schwarz . The entire assembly of the canvas films was carried out by 40 industrial climbers . This was followed by the 15-minute show I Love The World by Belgian video artist Marie-Jo Lafontaine .

The cost of this event was around seven million euros. About half of the project was carried out by the banks of the Main metropolis, whose skyscrapers served as projection surfaces, the other half by the city of Frankfurt.

media

The associated music and sounds were broadcast via 26 loudspeaker towers on the Main and a multi-channel sound system on Willy-Brandt-Platz , and at the same time via the radio station hr2 . In addition, the entire event, at its premiere , was broadcast live on the Hessischer Rundfunk, with Franz Beckenbauer as a guest on the show. But the spectacle could not only be admired in Germany . Several camera teams from different countries (e.g. Vietnam ) came to report on the SkyArena for their TV station . While the ARD was still being broadcast, calls were received from broadcasters in over 100 countries in order to secure the image rights for their own reports.

audience

The best way to see this event was from the Museum Embankment and the MainArena, which was built especially for the World Cup . According to the Frankfurt police, 600,000 to 650,000 visitors watched this spectacle on each of the three evenings. There were also numerous national and international tourists among the audience , some of whom had come specially for the SkyArena.

To accompany the soccer World Cup, all of the city museums in Frankfurt offered exhibitions on soccer topics.

High-rise buildings used as projection surfaces

The SkyArena used nine high-rise buildings in Frankfurt's banking district as a “ screen ”, namely the Commerzbank Tower , Eurotower , Silberturm , Gallileo and Skyper , which are clearly visible from the banks of the Main , as well as the Main Tower , Westendstraße 1 and Deutsche Bank high-rise buildings a little further inland . All skyscrapers are or were the headquarters of important financial institutions ( Commerzbank , Dresdner Bank , DZ Bank , Helaba , Deutsche Bank and the European Central Bank ).
