Ulrich Luz

Ulrich Luz (born February 23, 1938 in Männedorf ; † October 13, 2019 in Laupen ) was a Swiss theologian . Until 2003 he was Professor of New Testament at the University of Bern .

Life

Raised in Männedorf, Ulrich Luz made his graduation in 1956 at the Free School of Zurich. He studied Protestant theology in Zurich , Göttingen and Basel . After his assistantship, his doctorate in 1967 with Eduard Schweizer and his habilitation in 1968, he worked for one year as a pastor in Zurich-Seebach , then for two years as a visiting lecturer at two universities in Tokyo . From 1972 to 1980 he was full professor for the New Testament in Göttingen , then in Bern until his retirement in 2003.

His main research interests are the Gospel of Matthew - as the main author of an extremely detailed exegetical commentary -, the history (especially the history of religion ) of early Christianity and biblical hermeneutics . He is or was co-editor of the Evangelical-Catholic Commentary on the New Testament , the works from Albert Schweitzer's estate and the journals Evangelische Theologie , Judaica and New Testament Studies .

Ulrich Luz received seven honorary doctorates , most recently from Uppsala University in 2006 . His works have been translated into a total of nine languages. He lived in Laupen near Bern.
