Jürgen Becker (theologian)

Jürgen Becker (born December 11, 1934 in Hamburg ) is a German Protestant theologian .

After graduating from the Stormarn School in Ahrensburg and studying Protestant theology in Hamburg and Heidelberg , Becker was a research assistant at the Qumran Research Center in Heidelberg . He received his doctorate in 1961 with a thesis on concepts of salvation and sin in the Qumran texts and the New Testament . After his vicariate in Hamburg, he was a research assistant in Heidelberg and Bochum from 1963 to 1968 . Becker received his habilitation in 1968. From 1969 until his retirement in 2000 he was Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . From 1981 to 1984 he was vice president of the university. Becker was repeatedly dean of the theological faculty and senator of the university. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of Tartu University .
