Hans Weder (born December 27, 1946 in Diepoldsau in the canton of St. Gallen ) is a Swiss theologian specializing in the New Testament . From 2000 to August 2008 he was rector of the University of Zurich .

Life

Hans Weder studied theology at the University of Zurich from 1966 to 1972 and was then ordained. He completed postgraduate studies in St Andrews , Scotland, in 1972/73 , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy. In 1977 he did his doctorate in Zurich with Eduard Schweizer on the parables of Jesus and completed his habilitation in 1979 with a thesis on Pauline theology of the cross .

From 1980 to 2000 he was a full professor for New Testament science at the University of Zurich. From 1986 to 1988 he was Dean of the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich .

In 2000 he was elected rector of the University of Zurich. He resigned from this position in 2008, and Andreas Fischer was elected as his successor in 2006 . Since 2008 he has been Professor ad personam for New Testament Studies at the University of Zurich.

In November 2011 he took over the chairmanship of the University Council of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 2012 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Theological Faculty of the University of Jena .

Hans Weder has been accused of data protection violations (which the cantonal data protection officer has expressly determined to be unlawful), bullying, violation of the rule of law, procedural deficiencies and denial of the right to be heard (including by law professor Hans Ulrich Walder-Richli and lawyer Daniel Vischer ). In an appeal to the dismissal of the theology professor Ellen Stubbe, the government council of the canton of Zurich came to the conclusion that she had been dismissed by the university management (Rector Hans Weder) for no reason, and that Stubbe's claim for damages was unsuccessful because of formal legal errors.

Hans Weder researched the parables of Jesus and the Pauline theology of the cross, wrote a New Testament hermeneutic and worked on the new translation of the Zurich Bible . He also publishes several theological journals and has led projects for the Swiss National Science Foundation .
