With his early work on the Apostle Paul, Stuhlmacher gained international renown. Started with the program of a “post-critical interpretation of the scriptures”, he looked in connection and a. to develop a “ Biblical Theology ” with Hartmut Gese , in which the scientific Bible exegesis is supplemented by a “spiritual interpretation of Scripture”. Together with the Württemberg Altlandesbishop Theo Sorg , he published the volume “Das Wort vom Kreuz”, in which feminist theologians' criticism of the idea of sacrifice and atonement for the death of Jesus Christ is rejected.

For chair makers, Bible exegesis, church and mission are directly related. For example, he pleads for a stronger orientation of the church to the example of the first Christians, advocates house churches as the oldest form of congregation and emphasizes mission as a central theme of the New Testament. Because of these convictions, he got in contact with pietistic groups within the Protestant pastors. In the 1990s he submitted his Biblical Theology of the New Testament, an overall draft in which he bundled his interpretation of the Scriptures and which received widespread attention.

Stuhlmacher was an opponent of Rudolf Bultmann and an extension of Ernst Troeltsch's premise system .
