The Galerie Vorsetzen was an artist cooperative in Hamburg that existed from 1986 to 1996.

history

In 1986 five Hamburg artists ( Adam Jankowski , KP Brehmer , Anna Oppermann , Dagmar Fedderke, Constantin Hahm) as well as Herbert Hossmann and Gesine Petersen founded the artists' cooperative, initially as a self-help gallery, Galerie Vorsetzen (named after the address at Elbkai Vorsetzen 53 ). The artists invested 50,000 marks in setting up workrooms in an old commercial building that was also used by seafarers. Vorsatz Eins , the first exhibition from November 22, 1986 to January 3, 1987 showed works by Joseph Beuys , KP Brehmer, Miriam Cahn , Dagmar Fedderke , Robert Filliou , Jochen Gerz , Roland Goeschl , Constantin Hahm , Adam Jankowski, Arthur Köpcke , Robert Lettner , Olaf Metzel , Angelika Oehms , Anna Oppermann, Wolfgang Oppermann , CO Paeffgen and Gerd Rohling .

When the building had already developed into a forum for contemporary art a year later and was economically successful, the city sold the building at a lower value to a real estate investor who immediately terminated the tenants in order to rent it to Greenpeace in a luxury refurbished way. The last exhibitions in December 1987 also attracted a lot of media attention. Die Zeit described the situation as follows: Now the gallery Vorsetzen has been torpedoed [...] The city is also suitable for a winter fairy tale all by itself.

The gallery moved to new premises on Seilerstraße, where the second major exhibition took place from May 28 to July 16, 1988 under the name of intent 2 . Gao Zi Cheng, Ottmar Hörl , Magdalena Jetelová , Marie Jo Lafontaine , Wolfgang Lucy, Clemens Mitscher , Ernst Mitzka , Bjørn Nørgaard , CO Paeffgen were involved. Henning Christiansen and Phil Corner brought a music performance. The large light shaft, with a height of 18 meters, an artistic challenge, was first used by Claudia Rahayel with a light shaft installation. Light shaft installations became an integral part of the subsequent exhibitions, e.g. B. by Franka Hörnschemeyer , who did the work of art drywall there. Installed by 100 × 3.3 .

In 1988 the exhibition Gao Zicheng - Wu Shanzhuan - Schröder: 3 x China was shown, which was then shown from November 12th to December 4th, 1988 in the Saarbrücken City Gallery . Oswald Oberhuber exhibited object furniture, drafts, drawings (1989) and painting (1992) twice in the Vorsetzen gallery. From 1995, Vorsetzen was also represented at the ART Cologne .

Today Adam Jankowski's studio has been located in the former gallery since 1996, and the sign on the door still reminds of the former gallery.
