life and work

Claus Otto Paeffgen studied law in Cologne and Berlin , passed his first state examination in law in 1959 and finished his studies in 1962. In 1970 he began to paint and at the same time made objects, the wraps .

Paeffgen was known, among other things, for his ironic commentary outlines for photos and newspaper clippings. This involved the outlines of newspaper images, apparently traced with felt-tip pen, which were projected and reworked on canvas, as well as the wrapping of found objects and symbolic objects. Recurring motifs of these objects are: heart / arrow, mouse, bow, moon and question mark. He had his first exhibition in 1965 in a Berlin gallery. Since the 1980s, CO Paeffgen has achieved a high level of awareness with these works. In 1986 and 1988 his works were shown in the two major exhibitions at Galerie Vorsetzen . In between, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden had assembled almost 100 of his oil paintings and drawings for its first major museum exhibition.

With the wraps (wall and floor sculptures) Paeffgen traced the outlines of objects with wire. The raw material for this consists of found objects from everyday life; it is often banal things that Paeffgen wrapped in thick wire. Many of these "wraps" are gradually processed by Paeffgen. “They are strange, playful, crazy works, put together from many small ready-mades that are wrapped with wire. Bundled to stele-like, colored wall objects or piled on top of each other as an amorphous pile, everyday objects, affluent garbage and children's toys find an unusual unity and acquire an unexpected aesthetic appeal through the metallic shimmering wrappings. "

In the 1990s he produced groups of paintings, including fruit boxes ("Objects in Color") and acrylic on canvas ("Pictures with Titles"), as well as multiples in the form of unique pieces in limited series.

Paeffgen had numerous museum, art gallery and gallery exhibitions. In the spring of 1999 the Museum Ludwig in Cologne dedicated a retrospective to him . He lived and worked in Cologne.

Paeffgen was the cousin of the singer Nico , but they only met in later years. He died in 2019 at the age of 85 and was buried anonymously in Cologne's North Cemetery.
