Philip Corner

Philip Corner (born April 10, 1933 in the Bronx , New York City ) is an American composer , trumpeter , alphorn player , pianist , singer , fluxus artist , music theorist and visual artist .

life and work

Philip Corner studied composition with Henry Cowell and Otto Luening and music theory with Olivier Messiaen . He received his master's degree from Columbia University . In 1959 Philip Corner was drafted into the United States Army and served as a trumpeter in Korea until 1961. He studied calligraphy with Ki-sung Kim and got the name Gwan Pok (Contemplating Waterfall) from him. He got to know the Korean music Jeongak .

“One of the things I learned in Korea was to go into the quality of sound. I wanted to bring this notion into the range of possibilities — not in order to sound Oriental, but to enter into this thing that the Orient had explored that the West hadn't. And I pushed that as far as it could go, finding that place on the outside of the circle — which funnily enough leads to something that's 180 degrees removed, which is self expression! "

Since 1961 he belongs to the first generation of Fluxus artists. In 1962 Philip Corner's piece Piano Activities took place in the Wiesbaden Museum . George Maciunas , Nam June Paik , Wolf Vostell , Emmett Williams , Ben Patterson , Dick Higgins and Alison Knowles participated. The piece is inspired by works by John Cage .

From 1961 to 1975 Corner took private piano lessons with Dorothy Taubman in New York. Philip Corner, James Tenney and Malcom Goldstein were the founding members of the Tone Roads Chamber Ensemble in New York City in 1963 , which experimented with electroacoustic music . He worked with the Judson Dance Theater from 1962 to 1964 . A well-known work by Corner is Everything Max Has from 1964. Bill Fontana , Toshi Ichiyanagi , Richard Maxfield are among his friends. In 1976 Philip Corner, Barbara Benary and Daniel Goode were the founders of the music group Gamelan Son of Lion . New Wilderness Big Mix is the name of Charlie Morrow's radio play in which Corner participated. It was played at the documenta 8 in Kassel. From 1972 to 1992 Philip Corner was a professor at Rutgers University . He emigrated to Italy in 1992 and is married to the dancer and choreographer Phoebe Neville.

In addition to his work as a composer and musician, Corner has also made assemblages , calligraphies, and collages that have been exhibited in America, Asia, and Europe. He has published some lyrical works under the name Gwan Pok.
