Toshi Ichiyanagi ( Japanese 一 柳 慧 , Ichiyanagi Toshi ; born February 4, 1933 in Kobe ) is a Japanese composer.

Ichiyanagi was a student of Tomojiro Ikenouchi and Kishio Hirao . From 1952 to 1961 he lived in the USA. Here he attended the Juilliard School of Music and the New School for Social Research in New York City and was a student of composition with John Cage . Cage dedicated the piece 0 ′ 00 ″ to him and to Yoko Ono , with whom Ichiyanagi was married from 1956 to 1963 . In 1961 he returned to Japan. In the 1980s and 1990s he worked at the National Theater. He is the Artistic Director of the Kanagawa Art Foundation.

In addition to works for electronic musical instruments, he composed six symphonies , one violin and three piano concertos, two operas , chamber music works and piano pieces. He often combines classical Japanese with Western musical instruments in his works.

In 2008 Ichiyanagi was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 2018 he was awarded the Order of Culture .
